Former governor and Republican presidential candidate John Kasich appeared at the Democrat convention last night urging Americans, and more specifically Republicans, to vote for a presidential candidate who thoroughly supports killing babies in abortions.

His exhortation to conservatives to urge them to vote for Joe Biden and the forcefully pro-abortion Kamala Harris has already earned the ire of Republicans, who are calling him a sellout of conservative principles.

Kasich apparently thinks a candidate who’s perfectly fine with killing 62 million babies in abortions since 1973 is the right candidate to “unify” America.

“Many of us have been deeply concerned about the current path we’ve been following for the past four years,” he said during a roughly two-minute speech. “It’s a path that’s led to division, dysfunction, irresponsibility and growing vitriol between our citizens.”

“I’m a lifelong Republican, but that attachment holds second place to my responsibility to my country,” Kasich continued. “That’s why I’ve chosen to appear at this convention. In normal times, something like this would probably never happen, but these are not normal times.”

The ex-governor and former congressman acknowledged the differences of opinion he and others in the GOP may have with Biden. He sought to assuage concerns that the former vice president might be pulled to the left by progressives in the Democratic Party, saying he knows Biden to be “reasonable” and that “no one pushes Joe around.”

He urged independents and Republicans on the fence about Biden to put partisanship aside, warning that four more years of Trump would have “terrible consequences for America’s soul.”

“We can all see what’s going on in our country today and all the questions that are facing us, and no one person or party has all the answers,” Kasich said. “But what we do know is that we can do better than what we’ve been seeing today, for sure. And I know that Joe Biden, with his experience and his wisdom and his decency, can bring us together to help us find that better way.”

But “decency” doesn’t include slaughtering babies in abortions and forcing American taxpayers to fund them. That’s why the Washington Examiner says Kasich’s Biden endorsement makes it so he has abandoned any claims to conservatism.

“It’s no surprise that Kasich would agree to this — in fact, he is just the right Republican for the job. Republicans who find Trump distasteful are a dime a dozen, but Kasich outdoes them all in his desire to draw attention to himself,’ it said. The Examiner said Kasich, “once considered a staunch conservative and a rising star in his party, is only now truly abandoning his claim to conservatism.”

But the abortion issue is the biggest problem the newspaper has with Kasich’s sellout.

For example, just as he left office in December 2018, Kasich signed a ban on abortions after 12 weeks into pregnancy. Although he had vetoed the stricter “heartbeat bill,” his statement that “I’m pro-life” was not an empty claim. Kasich continues to point to his pro-life bona fides as proof that he is a conservative and a model for conservatives who feel they cannot support Trump in good conscience.

Yet now, he is not only refusing to vote for Trump, a perfectly defensible position for a conservative to take, but he has actually endorsed and campaigned at a convention on behalf of the most aggressively pro-abortion presidential ticket in U.S. history.

Joe Biden’s running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris, proposed a federal law that would invalidate state abortion laws on late-term abortions, let alone the early-term ones that Kasich banned in Ohio. She also wants to require Justice Department preclearance on all state abortion restrictions.

Of course, abortion is just one example of how ludicrous it is to assume that opposition to Trump should translate into support for a Democratic Party so far to the left of where it once was.

Biden has a long pro-abortion record that goes back for many years, and he supported President Barack Obama’s leadership as the most pro-abortion president in U.S. history. What’s more, pro-abortion movement leaders say they “trust” Biden to protect abortion on demand. As the vice president, he supported the administration’s pro-abortion policies, including Obamacare, which forced religious employers to pay for drugs that may cause abortions.

From 2001 to 2008, Biden’s voting record on pro-life issues was close to zero, according to the National Right to Life Committee. In 2005, for example, he voted against the Mexico City Policy, which prohibits funding to overseas groups that promote and/or perform abortions. He also voted repeatedly to require that military service members’ abortions be covered by taxpayer dollars.
